| The
emphasis on public transport by the government is to be welcomed. New
measures are slow in arriving, and infrastructure continues to
disintegrate. New legislation will edge its way through parliament.
This legislation will enable action by local authorities.
Where they choose to do something, it
will take time to develop plans, and even more to implement them. In
contrast to the slow pace of government initiatives, reaping the
benefits of telecommuting can begin right away. Businesses and
organisations need not wait for an integrated transport system to
emerge, or fight a rearguard action against councils who want to tax
company car parking spaces.
Rather they should set their own
agenda, using electronic communications to reduce their travel
requirements, improve productivity, and move forward confidently into
the Information Age.
