Time to start taking the tablets

...to make mobile computing work better

In due course we'll be seeing a lot more of the latest in mobile computing: the tablet PC. Just launched by Microsoft and a group of PC manufacturers, Flexibility believes this technology can trigger a revolution in mobile flexible working.

The tablet PC is essentially a screen – like an A4 notebook – incorporating a powerful computer running a special version of Windows. Like a giant palmtop, the tablet is operated with a stylus and can accept handwritten notes as well as “point and click” entries. A more advanced version incorporates a fold-out keyboard – rather like a laptop with a swivelling screen

Just as important as its size and flexibility is its networking capabilities. Tablets come with local wireless networking as standard and will soon be available with wide area networking – allowing them to work anywhere there is mobile phone coverage.

Uses are anticipated not only by mobile executives but also by those who work in the field – sales and maintenance staff, community workers and so on. With appropriately redesigned business processes and management regimes, the need to visit the office will reduce even further.

In a future Flexibility update we will provide a more detailed review and provide insights into its application for mobile flexible work.
