Probably the two greatest challenges we face at the moment
are the economic crisis and climate change. For businesses and
public sector organisations alike the response to both of these
challenges means doing more for less. Reducing costs, and
reducing the use of energy and resources.
Key to this is changing the way we work. Working
flexibly. Working smarter. The question is, how do
we quantify the benefits and ensure we achieve them?
A practical focus
This seminar will have a highly practical focus.
It will feature both leading edge research about the
environmental impacts of flexible working practices,
and case studies of measured implementations. And it
will provide guidance on the kinds of metrics and
targets that can be applied.
Key issues include:
- understanding the financial and carbon
reductions arising from reducing travel and
reducing office space by using new
communications technologies and new working
practices
- the carbon impacts of working from home
versus working in the office
- how to integrate environmental measurement
into flexible working programmes.
Speakers and sessions include:
- Matthew Farrow, Head of Energy, Transport
& Planning, CBI, on the business imperatives
for reducing the environmental impacts of the
ways we work through flexible working
- Chris Webber, Business Director of BT
Flexible Working Services – on the
significant Corporate Social Responsibility
improvements resulting from flexible working,
with case studies from BT customers
- Peter James, Associate Professor at
Bradford University presenting latest
research findings on the carbon impacts of
changes to working practices, including case
study data from large organisations
- Suzanne Pahlman, from the 21st Century
Office project who was Project leader of the
WWF / HP ICT Innovation Project and author of
the WWF’s white paper ‘From Green IT to Greening
with IT’, looking at low carbon working
practices and their benefits for business
- Celia Donne, Regional Director for Regus
– on the financial and carbon benefits
achievable through taking a flexible approach to
office accommodation, with case studies form
Regus customers
- Tom Oxley, Corporate Responsibility
Manager, Aviva UK – presenting a case study
of Aviva’s use of flexible working and new
communications technologies to make impressive
reductions in costs and carbon footprint
- Andy Lake, Editor of Flexibility.co.uk
and co-editor of the influential Smith Institute
think-tank report, ‘Can Homeworking Save the
Planet?’
There will also be an expert workshop on how to
develop a robust approach to integrating the
financial and environmental benefits.
Who should attend:
Senior decision makers in the public and private sectors, especially from
Strategy, Property, Finance, HR, Facilities, IT functions and
managers charged with developing change management and flexible
working projects in their services.
